Battle Creek could house food safety institute
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Battle Creek could soon play a big role in making sure the food we eat is safe.
Legislation introduced in Washington calls for a food protection training institute to be located in Battle Creek.
The measure is supported by Congressmen Mark Shauer and Fred Upton, as well as by Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin.
The Kellogg Foundation is already putting two million dollars into the program. The institute would be installed at Western Michigan University's Kendall Center.
"From a consumer stand-point, we all benefit by making sure there are highly qualified, trained, food inspectors that are focusing on food safety, and that is the same no matter where you are, in Michigan or around the country. We have the expertise right here in Michigan," said Sen. Debbie Stabenow.
WMU says it plans to be a strategic partner with the food institute, well beyond just providing the space for training.
