I think laws don't get passed largely because the Amish don't pay taxes and don't vote. They were up in arms (as much as Amish people can be) over being forced to put fluorescent orange triangles on the back of their buggies. If they aren't willing to be a part of the rest of the country, I don't think we should ever do anything for them. They really don't even deserve to use our paved roads, because they didn't help pay for them. I'm not wishing harm on them, or these accidents to happen, but they get to reap the benefits that society has to offer while contributing nothing. Just because they are pacifists doesn't mean they aren't capable of exceptional cruelty. If someone fails to conform to their strict rules, they can be "shunned" (which means that everyone you know and love is forbidden to have anything to do with you ever, lest they themselves become shunned). I suppose a people can be exceptionally polite at the risk of having their entire life stripped from them. They also look down upon education, which only helps to perpetuate some of the more negative aspects of their society. I suppose that in the end it doesn't really matter, as their incredibly insular nature has caused a lot of genetic restriction. I doubt they'll last indefinitely for that reason alone. Having said that, if they paid taxes I wouldn't care, but they don't. That alone strips them of any right to protection by or from society.
