Cooney calls for revisiting economic bill of rights
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Labor leaders led a rally Monday in Kalamazoo, calling for a new plan to get people back to work.
Kalamazoo City Commissioner Don Cooney hosted the demonstration.
He's a democrat who is running for Congress in the 6th District.
Right now the nation is looking at a 9.6 percent unemployment rate. Here in Michigan it's in the double digits.
Cooney says it's time to revisit the "economic bill of rights" President Franklin Roosevelt tried to pass decades ago.
The list includes the right to a useful job and the right to provide adequate food and clothing.
“We believe that the government has to intervene to create those jobs. Now people will say, oh, the deficit the deficit. It's true, the deficit is a concern. But President Roosevelt said again one time, you can't borrow your way out of debt, but you can invest in a brighter future," said Cooney.
Cooney's going up against republican Fred Upton in November. Upton has held the seat since 2002.
