Deer killed at Kent Co. facility where CWD found
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Federal wildlife officials have killed about 50 whitetail deer at a private Kent County breeding facility where Michigan's first case of chronic wasting disease in a deer was found.
The Grand Rapids Press reports the animals were killed by U.S. Department of Agriculture officials on Tuesday, one day after the case was confirmed. Officials have declined to identify the Kent County facility involved.
The deer were transported to the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health at Michigan State University for examination. Carcasses are expected to be incinerated after they are tested.
There's no evidence the fatal neurological disease is present in free-ranging herds.
