A Man and his Dog Killed by Driver

NORTH PLAINS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A man and his dog are dead after being hit by a car.

The Ionia County Sheriff's Office says Donald Schafer, 63, of Hubbardston was riding his bike Saturday on the shoulder of Borden Road with his dog walking along side.

A 84-year-old Belding man struck the two from behind. Schafer was thrown from his bike. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His dog was rushed to a local veterinary clinic but died shortly after.

The accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Ionia County Sheriff's Office or the Silent Observer.
