Dozens of teaching jobs lost
Comments 0 | Recommend 0GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) -Budget troubles could cost dozens more teaching jobs in Grand Rapids.
News reports say that Monday night the school board approved sending layoff notices to 141 teachers.
The district had already announced plans to eliminate 95 teachers, but these new layoff notices put 46 more teaching positions on the chopping block.
District officials say some of them may be called back, depending on how many teachers decide to retire during the summer.
Several other local school districts are feeling the budget crunch as well.
Reports say Jenison Public Schools approved privatizing its custodial services Monday night. That will cost about 17 custodians their jobs.
The district says it prevented program cuts and layoffs for nine teachers.
Holland Public Schools also approved cuts Monday night, eliminating 35 to 40 positions. Portage Public Schools also cut positions.
