Dozens of school jobs could be slashed
WYOMING, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kent County school district could slash dozens of jobs Monday night due to a shrinking budget.
Nearly 60 employees could be let go as Wyoming schools face a budget deficit so high they are being forced to make cuts mid-year.
Because of cuts in state funding the district is looking at cutting $2.4 million in the middle of this school year.
Among those slated to lose their jobs are at least 22 teachers, six school counselors, two assistant principals and an athletic director.
The superintendent says the cuts are needed now to prevent even bigger cuts next year.
The cuts are not sitting well with parents.
The superintendent says all of these cuts can be avoided if staff in the Wyoming School District all take a 3.2-percent pay cut.
Reports say the teacher's union wants the district to dip into the general fund to cover the gap.
A meeting on those cuts will take place Monday night at 5:30.
