Drunk driver hits, injures deputy

DECATUR, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Van Buren County Sheriff deputy is recovering after being hit by a drunk driver, while pulling over another suspected drunk driver.

Deputy Matt Konkle had stopped a car on Delaware St. near Mill St. in Decatur around 2 o'clock Friday morning, after suspecting that the driver of that car may have been drunk.

But while he was getting a breathalyzer out of the trunk of his patrol car, another driver slammed into him, pinning him between the two cars.

Deputy Konkle's patrner had to move the patrol car in order to free Deputy Konkle, who was then taken to the hospital with cuts on his arms and a broken leg. He's expected to be okay.

The driver that hit Deputy Konkle was arrested on drunk driving charges, but the driver that was originally pulled over was found not to have been driving drunk.

The second driver's name will not be released until he is arraigned in Van Buren Co. District Court.
