Coast Guard helicopter saves 2 in Lake Michigan
EMPIRE, Mich. (AP) - A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew has rescued two kayakers from Lake Michigan near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
The Coast Guard says the kayakers were in danger of drowning on Friday amid 6- to 10-foot waves after their boats started taking on water.
One of the kayaks sank about a mile from shore and the other nearly sank.
Both kayakers were wearing life jackets.
The crew from Air Station Traverse City responded after a National Park Service employee spotted the men and called for help.
The men were plucked from the water about 2 miles apart with help from a rescue swimmer.
