Snowy Monday for South Haven
SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Unrelenting lake effect snow pounded the West Michigan lakeshore Monday, and it's not letting up.
In South Haven, the snow was still falling Monday night. The city was put under a snow emergency early Monday afternoon after nearly a foot of snow fell.
“We probably got a foot early this morning and another foot early this afternoon,” said Holly Muller.
Lake effect snow dumped inches on the lake side community, causing any number of minor headaches. Snow closed most of the businesses on Main Street early on Monday.
“Normally I close at seven, but I think today we are going to close at five,” said Muller.
Other businesses were attempting to close early, but business spiked the faster the snow came down. At McDonald's Drug Store, Marriam Schultz braved the worst of the weather to pick up medication for her kids. She said it took her nearly twice as long as usual due to the hazardous road conditions.
“It took me nearly 45 minutes driving at like fifteen miles an hour,” said Schultz.
At South Haven Fire and Rescue, crews were on standby due to the snow emergency.
“We've called in extra crews to help get people out if need be,” said Ronald Wise of South Haven Emergency Services.
They went as far as keeping plows on standby.
“We have two plows that we can call in the event of an emergency,” said Wise.
Officials are hoping they won't need to call out the plows or extra crews, and are advising people to stay off the roads if at all possible.
Officials say it has been fairly quiet Monday night, with only minor accidents reported. As far as the roads go, plows were waiting for the snow to quiet down before they start plowing.
