Lawmakers look to grant residency to Kurdish immigrant
MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Two lawmakers from Michigan have renewed their efforts to get the Senate and the House to grand permanent U.S. residency to Kurdish immigrant Ibrahim Parlak.
Senator Carl Levin and Representative Fred Upton introduced bills on Tuesday, Levin and Upton introduced similar bills in 2005 and in 2007.
The Department of Homeland Security wants to deport Parlak. They cite his involvement, years ago, with a Turkish organization that the agency now considers a terrorist group.
Parlak was born in Turkey and came to the United States seeking asylum in 1991.
