It is primary election day
Comments 0 | Recommend 0WEST MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Most of you have local issues to decide Tuesday. The polls open at 7:00 Tuesday morning and close at 8:00 p.m.
One important thing to remember is that your ballot won't count if it's split between Republican and Democratic candidates.
One of the most controversial issues on the ballot is the Kent County Jail millage renewal. Supporters say its necessary to upgrade the older part of the building. Deputies say it's in bad shape with plumbing problems and crumbling walls.
The renewal wouldn't raise taxes, but would keep them at the same level. That means pumping about $17 million a year into the jail.
Another big race is the Republican primary for the 88th District State House seat. That covers most of Allegan County. Eight people are on the ballot trying to replace Representative Fulton Sheen. His seat is vacant because of term limits.
People will also be keeping a close eye on the Democratic primary for the 7th U.S. Congressional District. State Senator Mark Schauer is squaring off against Sharon Renier. The winner of the race will face off against incumbent Representative Tim Walberg in November.
The sheriff's race in St. Joseph County involves some unlikely opponents. Four men are running for the job. Gordon Evilsizor is in farming and worked as a patrol officer in White Pigeon. Michael Thyng has been a state trooper for 20 years. The other two candidates were raised like brothers in the same household, but now Dennis Allen and Brad Balk are rivals in the election.
