Family jumps from burning home

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo family had to jump for their lives when a fire broke out at their home.

A mother, father, their 3-year-old and a toddler all escaped the home Tuesday night.

The home is in the 1,500 block of North Park Street.

The call went out to public safety just before 11 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting out the front and back of the home.

The captain on the scene told us the four residents escaped, including a 3-year-old boy and an 11-month-old girl who were thrown out a second floor window so they'd survive.

The mother was also forced to jump from the second story.

All of the victims were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital and were treated for injuries including minor burns, a sprained ankle and smoke inhalation.

The father says the fire started in the kitchen when grease ignited the stove, although investigators have not yet confirmed the cause.

The family of four is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

Their home is unlivable. They'll be staying with family members.
