Kalamazoo home invasions up 30 percent from '08

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is warning people about an alarming spike in home invasions.

Officers say crimes like home burglaries are up 30 percent from last year, and that people need to be aware that these crimes are on the rise, so they don't leave themselves open to becoming a victim.

Most of the crimes take place in the evening and early morning, and many of the crooks are getting into homes through open windows and unlocked doors.

Police say the best advice is simple advice: keep your doors and windows locked.

KDPS is also stepping up their undercover patrols.
