Kalamazoo plans to ring in the new year with its own ball drop

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – As 2009 comes to a close, the City of Kalamazoo will be dropping its own, brand new, New Year's ball.

The ball is six feet in diameter and cost approximately $20,000 to build. It will be dropped 100 feet in 60 seconds as 2009 wraps up.

Between eight and ten thousand people attending the previous New Year's Fest, and organizers are hoping that the ball drop will bring out even more.

"He used all recycled materials and LED lights,' said New Year's Fest organizer Deborah Droppers. "It's phenomenal, and what's cool about this is it really is green and sustainable because it's powered by a sugar-based ethanol."

The New Year's Fest in Kalamazoo features nine indoor venues with different shows. To enter any of the venues you will need a button, which costs five dollars.
