Kids head back to school
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Kids have strapped on their backpacks for the first day of school.
Local sheriff's departments are sending out an alert to drivers and kids walking to school. Drivers should be aware that it will be dark out as kids make their way to classes, so use extra caution in school zones and intersections where kids may be crossing.
Also, make sure to stop for school buses when they have their flashers on.
For kids, make sure to walk on sidewalks or bike paths where available. If there are no sidewalks you should walk along the side of the road facing traffic.
You're also encouraged to wear light-colored clothing and don't wear headphones or use other devices that might distract you from traffic.
Arrive at your bus stop early and never walk behind the bus.
