Arraigned for the crash that killed his son
CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A West Michigan man has been arraigned in Calhoun County for the death of his own son.
Investigators say Robert Ruh was drunk when he lost control of his car and flipped near Homer, killing his seven year old in December of 2009.
Ruh made his first court appearance on Thursday.
Ruh's been waiting in jail to be arraigned for more than three months. Normally he would have had to be charged within 72 hours of being detained, but he was on parole at the time of the crash.
The conditions of his parole said he could not use or possess alcohol, and police say Ruh violated both conditions in the crash that killed his son.
For that reason, police have been able to hold Ruh on parole violations.
Ruh was charged with operating while intoxicated resulting in death, and operating while intoxicated with an underage person.
Because of his prior record, Ruh could face life in prison.
Ruh's preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 24th at 9:30 am. His bond has been set at $150,000.
