Flu season, ailing economy aiding Mich. drug maker
Comments 0 | Recommend 0ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan drugmaker is doing well even though it's located in the state with the country's highest unemployment rate.
Perrigo Co. is the nation's largest manufacturer of generic over-the-counter medications. It reported more than $61 million in profit last quarter - a 60 percent spike from the same time last year.
It's also looking to hire. Business is expected to remain strong and the company wants to fill 60 positions with scientists, engineers and quality-control experts at its corporate headquarters and research and production site in Allegan, Mich.
Daniel Farrell is a professor of management at Western Michigan University. He says the company usually does well during flu season, and may be benefiting from the many cases this season.
