Power outage leads to a literal Black Friday in Kent County

KENTWOOD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Black Friday certainly lived up to its name in part of Kent County.

Consumers Energy crews were still trying to restore power to a busy shopping district on 28th Street in Kentwood Friday evening.

About 850 customers lost power just after 11:00 Friday morning. Even some traffic lights were out.

It was a big hassle as shoppers poured into stores looking for deals at Meijer, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and others.

We spoke with workers at Target. They used a generator to turn the lights on and get the cash registers working so customers didn't miss out on anything.

Energy crews were working into the night, switching on customers one at a time. They think underground wiring may be to blame.
