Engler wants Guantanamo detainees brought to Michigan
MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Lawmakers are working to keep suspected terrorists out of America.
President Obama wants to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison in January.
Thursday, House republicans will introduce legislation to stop those detainees from being transferred to prisons in the U.S.
But where some politicians see a potential threat, others see dollar signs.
According to the Detroit Free Press former Michigan Governor John Engler wants to put Guantanamo Bay detainees in Michigan prisons.
He pitched the idea to state legislators last week.
Engler says Michigan could charge up to a billion dollars a year to turn a prison in the upper peninsula into a terrorist holding facility.
