Kalamazoo woman found murdered in North Carolina
(NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A woman from Kalamazoo has been found murdered in North Carolina.
Police in Swansboro say 50-year-old Susan Zemlick was shot and killed Monday at the home where she was staying.
On Wednesday Newschannel 3 spoke with her husband's family, who live in Portage.
Susan and Matthew Zemlick separated about eight months ago. Matthew's family says the couple had been together for more than five years before they were married in Kalamazoo in 2009.
Shortly after they were married, the couple moved to the area near Marine Corps base Camp Lejune, in coastal North Caroline. Matthew is a Corporal in the Marine Corps.
The couple was no longer living together, and detectives with the Swansboro Police Department says Matthew is not a suspect in the murder.
Police say they do have a suspect, and are preparing to make an arrest, but the name of that suspect has not been released.
Larry Zemlick, Matthew's father, says Susan was a great woman who his son loved very much. He released a statement saying in part;
“The family is helping Matthew deal with his shock and grief while dealing with their own sadness over these tragic events and request that their right to privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Newschannel 3 will stay on top of this story and pass on information as it becomes available.
