Prosecutors to determine if charges to be filed in case of woman struck by multiple cars
PAW PAW, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – In Van Buren County, a woman is suffering from serious injuries after being hit by at least two cars. The incident happened on the west bound exit ramp from I-94 to M-40 in Paw Paw.
Police don't know why, but for some reason, the woman was walking along the exit ramp around 2:00 am Monday morning.
Investigators say one driver hit 33-year-old Sally Richards then kept going. That driver was later found on her cell phone in a nearby parking lot after police tracked a trail of radiator fluid. A second driver also hit Richards, that driver continued on to M-40 where she flagged down an officer. That driver says someone ahead of her might have hit Richards as well.
Police now say they're sending the case to the prosecutors office to determine if anyone will be charged. They're questioning why the drivers didn't stop at the scene.
“These days, just about everybody has a cell phone,” said Paw Paw Chief of Police Patrick Alspaugh. “Could stop, position your car so I'd think you could render aid to the victim so nobody else would hit the victim, then get on the cell and call police.”
Witnesses have told police that the victim may have been intoxicated. Police say neither of the drivers who struck Richards had been drinking.
The report is now going to the prosecutors office for review.
