Two robbed at gunpoint in Portage
PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Police are searching for a man who hopped into a car and robbed two people at gunpoint.
The incident took place before 5:00 pm on Fox Valley Drive in Portage. The victims say they had pulled into Foxwood Apartments when a man approached the car. He hopped into the back seat, and told the driver and passenger to keep looking forward.
The man then put a gun to the driver's back, and duct tape over his eyes, then told both men to hand over their cell phones and wallets.
The robber also grabbed stereo equipment before he jumped out of the car and ran off.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers and county deputies are all investigating the case. They think a serial robber may have struck again, one that's been making the rounds recently.
Officers dropped off surveillance images to Newschannel 3 from the 7-11 on KL Avenue where a man in a hooded sweatshirt held up the store on Saturday morning.
That robber matches the description of Monday's robber in Portage.
Police also think the robber had a busy weekend. They've connected that man to four other robberies between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Armed robbers hit the 7-11 on West Michigan around 11:00 pm Saturday, a few hours later, they held up a man in the parking lot of Wal-Mart on 9th Street. Then on Sunday morning, a man says some men beat and robbed him at Drakes Pond Apartments. About fifteen minutes after that incident, a driver at the Speedway down the road fought off the would-be robbers by spraying them with gasoline.
Police do think the robbers will strike again, and are asking residents to stay alert and keep their eyes open for anything suspicious.
