Vehicle slams into house, raining drywall and glass onto infant

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Monday saw some scary moments for a Kent County family when an out of control car slammed into a little boy's bedroom.

Drywall and glass came crashing down into a crib where an 18-month-old was sleeping. The boy was uninjured in the crash.

The boy's mother, Ashley Hammink, who works third shift, was taking a nap while the boy's grandmother, Betty Anthony, had just returned from the store when she saw the scene.

“Came home and seen all the flashing lights, freaking out, it was totally freaking out,” said Anthony. “I couldn't get into my driveway at first, so when I did get in, I just parked my car, come running up to the house crying, cause when I seen that car, I just thought I don't have a grandson anymore.”

The driver, a 27-year-old man from Grandville says he blacked out behind the wheel. He has been charged with reckless driving and driving on a suspended license.

Police say neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be involved in the incident.
