Credit card info stolen from Portage restaurant
Comments 0 | Recommend 0PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A new West Michigan restaurant is reeling from a hacker.
Spicy Pickle in Portage recently discovered a security breach. Someone stole credit card information and is using that information to go on a shopping spree.
The restaurant says it has contacted the Portage Police Department.
Detectives say they're looking at several dozen cases of credit card fraud. Police say what they all have in common is those people used their credit or debit cards at the Spicy Pickle on Centre.
The restaurant says about 10 days ago, its credit card processing company reported the breach.
Police aren't sure how the hacker or hackers got into the Spicy Pickle's computer system, but they recommend people check their statements more often during the holiday season.
Victims in this case told us their cards were used as far away as South Carolina and Tennessee.
A sign at the restaurant advises customers Spicy Pickle is cash only right now.
"We take similar cases throughout the year, what's unusual about this one is the amount of individuals affected and trying to figure out how it took place," said Sgt. John Blue with the Portage Police Department.
This is part of a statement the Spicy Pickle gave us Monday morning:
"It, instead looks as if the breech took place through the devices of a professional computer hacker located outside the state of Michigan. This breech occurred despite the fact that our restaurant has some of the most sophisticated firewall protection in place."
The Spicy Pickle also says it has added additional firewall protection to protect customers.
If you believe you were a victim of credit card fraud at that restaurant, call your bank and then Portage police.
