Layoff notices at academy for at-risk teens
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Monday saw another step in the process of closing down an academy for at-risk teens in Battle Creek.
Staff at the Michigan Youth Challenge Academy began getting layoff notices Monday.
The school, which is run by the National Guard, will close for good the day after Christmas if officials can't find $1.2 million in funding.
The state legislature did provide some funding in the new budget, but not enough to keep the school open. The $1.2 million would allow the academy to stay open for one more year.
