State orders Three Rivers to clean up water supply
THREE RIVERS, Mich. (AP) - The state has ordered the southwestern Michigan city of Three Rivers to immediately start making improvements to its public water supply system.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality made the announcement Friday.
The department says it tried for years to get Three Rivers to voluntarily comply with state standards for safe drinking water.
The city has a long history of violations involving the presence of coliform bacteria in its water supply.
The DEQ has ordered it to install a permanent water-treatment system.
Three Rivers doesn't routinely chlorinate its water but the city's Web site says it has started adding chlorine for now after finding coliform Tuesday in water samples.
A phone message seeking comment was left at the city.
