Saugatuck-Douglas honored

SAUGATUCK-DOUGLAS, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The majestic beauty of the dunes and the lake shore caught the eye of the judges in a national competition. Saugatuck-Douglas is the only place in Michigan that took a spot on the 2009 list of a 'Dozen Distinctive Destinations.' In years past, the national honor has gone to Petoskey, Mackinac Island and Holland.

Newschannel 3 went to Saugatuck to find out what the award means to the area.

In the current economic climate, people in Saugatuck hope that Tuesday's announcement will bring some much needed tourism dollars to the lake shore.

The honor is given annually to just 12 cities across the country. Saugatuck and Douglas joined forces to become members of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's 2009 Dozen Distinctive Destinations, the only Michigan destination honored in 2009.

"A place where people want to come enjoy the sand, the beaches, climb Mount Balding, but also the distinctive downtown they have, very vibrant, very exciting," said Nan Taylor of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

"We know we have a very historic community," said Barry Johnson, Mayor of Saugatuck, "it's nice to get the recognition."

"It didn't really surprise me that we received it although I know there were many people going for it," said Matt Balmer, the Mayor of Douglas.

The award has been given out for ten years to communities across the U.S. that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from what you'd find at your typical vacation destination. And the mayors from both towns agree that the Saugatuck-Douglas community fits the bill. They hope the history and charm on display will entice even more people to visit once winter is over.
