NY boy falls down elevator shaft

NEW YORK (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some New Yorkers are demanding that something be done after a boy fell down an elevator shaft and died.

Investigators say an elevator in an apartment building got stuck as a 5-year-old and his older brother left for school.

They started pressing buttons and the doors opened just far enough for the younger child to slip through.

He jumped down to the next floor, but lost his balance and fell backwards down the shaft.

Tenants say the elevator has had problems for some time, but the building's owner refuses to fix them properly.
