They say the building is making them sick

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – They say they're being forced to work in a building that's making them sick. On Friday, Newschannel 3 spoke to someone who works inside Battle Creek's Toeller Building.

“We don't know one minute or the other if we have to stay or leave,” said the employee, who spoke to us anonymously.

Newschannel 3 has been digging into the health concerns surrounding the Toeller Building. Workers there are adamant that something in that building is making them sick, but it's a mystery that no one can seem to figure out.

DHS workers at the Toeller Building say they become nauseated, get nose bleeds, and have breathing problems, but the county says all the air tests are coming back clean, though they do admit there is debris falling on the desks there.

On Friday, Newschannel 3 spoke to one employee who's not afraid to admit she's scared.

Employees at the Toeller Building have been asked not to talk to the media after several employees there have become ill, but Newschannel 3 found one employee on Friday who agreed to speak if we concealed her identity.

“They say there is nothing to worry about,” said the employee.

Employees for the Department of Human Services at the Toeller Building in Battle Creek are worried that the air they breathe at work could be harmful. In fact a number of employees have reportedly become ill over the past few days, forcing the building to close twice in the course of a week.

Private investigator Jim Carlin used to work at the DHS and says he knows of a few former colleagues who have fallen ill.

“I've known so many people who have had mysterious ailments,” said Carlin.

The county, however, says that after performing several air quality tests that all came back clean, business is going back to normal.

“We've had the air tested three times by three different air-testing companies and the results have all come back as safe,” said Kelli Scott, Calhoun Co. Administrator.

The employee Newschannel 3 spoke with says that despite those tests, employees are still apprehensive.

“There are rumors, stuff in the walls, it doesn't comfort anybody or make you feel better,” said the employee. “I think we are all a little nervous until we find what is causing these problems.”

That employee says the only reason she is coming forward is to protect the public.

“If there is something bad in this building, people come into this building for services, they shouldn't be exposed either,” said the employee.

That employee says not only is she a bit hesitant to return to work on Monday, but the recent health concerns have also taken quite the toll on employee moral.
