Similar names, dangerous situation
CONSTANTINE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Some people in Saint Joseph County say similar street names in Constantine could create a dangerous situation.
The trouble is that White Pigeon Road and White Pigeon Street are very close to each other. Some homes on those streets even have identical house numbers.
People living there say that leads to some confusion for some police and firefighters.
One woman we spoke with says they've shown up at her house a few times while the problem was actually on the other street and that these mix-ups could be costly if someone was in danger.
"Police have come to my house because of a domestic call," said Shontell King of White Pigeon Road. "They've come to my house because of a break-in the the garage."
"I even noticed the firemen went right up to the White Pigeon Street, turned around, and come to White Pigeon Road," said White Pigeon Street resident Robert Hochstetler.
The village manager tells us there was a public hearing last year to consider changing the name of one of those streets, but that most people who turned out said they didn't want their road changed so the request was rejected.
