Soldier's ashes stolen before funeral
WASHINGTON D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police in Washington D.C. are looking for the people who stole a soldier's ashes right before his funeral.
Colonel Norbert Schmidt earned a bronze star and two Purple Hearts while fighting in the Korean War.
He died three months ago and this weekend his family had a military funeral planned for him.
But, someone stole the urn with Schmidt's ashes out of their SUV, along with a computer and some other things.
"We lost him three months ago, we already went through all of that. And as my sister put it we lost him all over again, it feels like he just died yesterday again," said daughter Carol Schmidt. "It means nothing to them and they've got the jewelry, they've got the computer, they've got the GPS, those are things. We need my dad's ashes back."
Schmidt's family went ahead with the funeral, but say it wasn't the same.
Schmidt wanted to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery alongside the fellow soldiers he fought with in Korea.
