Firefighter under investigation for soliciting minors

KENT COUNTY, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – A registered sex offender, who is also a Plainfield Township firefighter, is being investigated on a complaint of soliciting a child.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department is looking into suspicious conversations that allegedly took place on Facebook with several 15-year-olds. They don't believe any physical contact was ever made.

Jeff Hawkins has been with the fire department since 1993 and is currently a Lieutenant, he's been suspended from his job pending the results of an investigation.

Newschannel 3 spoke with the Plainfield Township Fire Chief, David Peterson and he said he knew that Hawkins was a registered sex offender. He said Hawkins is a good man and has no other problems. Peterson said he's waiting for all the facts to come out.

Deputies have searched Hawkins home and seized his computer, but no arrests have been made as of now.
