MICHIGAN (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – State Representative Tonya Schuitmaker is reminding local residents that they are still able to file their taxes in order to receive an economic stimulus check from the federal government, but time is running out.

More than 150,000 Michigan households have not collected their stimulus payment, which amounts to $46.4 million in unclaimed money that is owed to residents. Allegan, Van Buren and Kalamazoo counties all make the list of the top 20 counties with unclaimed payments.

Schuitmaker said some people may not realize that they have to file a tax return to receive the stimulus payment. Disabled veterans, people with disabilities and low-income seniors could be especially affected because they normally aren’t required to file tax returns.
