Sentencing set for man in Grand Rapids strangling

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan man will be sentenced for fatally strangling a pregnant woman after a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and other charges.

Edwin Lario-Munoz is scheduled to appear Thursday in Kent County Circuit Court for sentencing.

A jury in October found the Honduran native guilty in the October 2005 attack on Silvia Sanchez-Parada at the home she and her husband shared with Lario-Munoz in Grand Rapids. Her unborn child didn't survive.

Lario-Munoz was earlier convicted in the attack but a new trial was ordered because of hearsay allowed at his first trial.

The Grand Rapids Press reports defense attorney Charles Clapp argued at trial that the victim's husband could have murdered her.
