Study: Most nursing homes not ready for pandemics
Comments 0 | Recommend 0AMERICA (AP) - Researchers say 52 percent of nursing homes in Michigan and Nebraska lack plans for handling a disease pandemic.
They say of those that do have a plan, only 10 percent have practiced it.
The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Out of the 400 nursing homes in the study, only 23 percent had a specific plan for influenza pandemics.
Lead researcher Philip Smith from the University of Nebraska Medical Center says he believes the greatest threat comes from avian flu.
That strain has killed at least 216 people worldwide since 2003.
