Fatal head-on crash closes road

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Deputies in Ottawa Co. responded to a serious crash in Georgetown Township Tuesday morning.

Around 7:20 two cars hit head-on on Port Sheldon Road at Brook Field. Police say that 18-year-old Eric Michael Helm of Jenison was driving a white car and crossed the center line, running head-on into a Nissan pickup truck driven by 46-year-old Joel William Brouwer of Hudsonville.

Emergency responders called in Aero Med to transport Helm, but he died before they could get there.

Brouwer was taken to the hospital with injuries to his leg.

Police say that Helm was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Brouwer was wearing his.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Department says Helm was driving to pick up his girlfriend.

Police closed Port Sheldon Road between 36th and 40th to investigate the accident. It has since re-opened.
