Creating a support system for gay and transgendered youth
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Creating a support system for gay and transgendered youth is the focus of a series of discussions right now in Kalamazoo.
Researchers at San Francisco State University just completed the first study on family response to a child coming out and the affect it has on that child's physical and mental health.
The author says just by talking about the issue parents can greatly reduce their child's risks of depression, suicide and substance abuse.
The researcher also points out the importance of inclusion and creating groups where gay and transgendered youth can interact with peers and feel welcome.
