DETROIT (AP) - Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation have announced a $16.7 million grant to train math and science teachers for work in urban school districts in the state.

Granholm said Friday in Detroit that renewed training for young teachers is necessary to help turn around the state's poor economy.

The grant from the Battle Creek-based foundation covers five years and has been awarded to the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. Prospective middle school and high school teachers will be recruited by six Michigan universities for the intensive two-year master's program in education.

Each teacher will receive a $30,000 fellowship and three years of mentoring once they complete the program and are hired. The participating schools will be announced in January.
