Jewelry store murder suspect's trial begins
Comments 0 | Recommend 0GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - The trial for Dimiti Anderson began in Grand Haven Tuesday.
Anderson has been charged with murder. Investigators think he co-conspired with his brother to kill two men inside an Ottawa County jewelry store in July.
Anderson, a man with a lengthy criminal history, is accused of killing store owner Bob Karell and store customer Louie Paparella. Detectives think the Andersons robbed the store of cash.
This is a double homicide that rocked the community this summer and still is an emotional issue for so many who walk by that store every day.
In testimony that came out in the trial's opening statements we learned from the prosecuting attorney that Carol had a large amount of cash on-hand inside the store because he would often pay cash for gold that people had.
Police have said the Andersons knew of the store and during the alleged murders robbed it of cash and jewelry. All of that evidence is expected to be introduced in court.
Police have not specified which Anderson brother they think pulled the trigger, though that information is expected to come out soon in court.
It is estimated that $20,000 was robbed from the store's safe and Carol's desk. The Andersons allegedly tried to use that money to buy several items including mopeds and an automobile.
Anderson's brother Darick is also accused of the same crime. He is not being tried at this time though. Prosecutors believed that the brothers' testimony might be contradictory and confusing to a jury, so Darick Anderson will be tried in March.
