Mich. voters decide on stem cell research proposal

DETROIT (AP) - Michigan voters decide today whether to loosen restrictions on embryonic stem cell research after weeks of back-and-forth battling between supporters and opponents.

Proposal 2 would change state law to allow people to donate embryos left over from fertility treatments for scientific research.

Those embryos may or may not be suitable for implantation, and they otherwise would be thrown away as medical waste.

The most recent poll showed likely voters supported the proposal after earlier polls showed the race about even.

Some embryonic stem cell research is allowed in Michigan -- but only on stem cell lines already established by researchers in other states.
