Wayland Superintendent to speak to Newschannel 3 about Words of Warning
WAYLAND, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – It was a story that Newschannel 3 broke in February, a threat against Wayland Union School that was never reported to the police, and school officials are now getting some major heat for that decision.
Before a school board meeting on Monday night, the superintendent of Wayland schools will sit down and talk with Newschannel 3.
At the school board meeting, some parents in Wayland are going to be asking for Superintendent Eivor Swan to step aside from her duties in the wake of a Newschannel 3 investigation. Before that meeting, Swan will sit down with Newschannel 3, and we'll bring you the details of that interview Monday night.
Wayland's Police Chief has said that Swan broke the law by not informing officers immediately about a suspected shooting threat at the district's high school.
In our investigation, Newschannel 3 dug into the law and found Public Act 102, which says that any threat involving a suspected armed student is a mandated reportable offense between schools and law enforcement.
State education leaders tell Newschannel 3 that the district broke state law by not cooperating with police instantly, and not informing them of a threat.
After Newschannel 3's investigation aired, school leaders defending their actions, saying that the shooting incident had been resolved immediately after they heard the rumor, and that law enforcement wasn't needed.
Now, Wayland's Police Chief is forwarding a report to the county prosecutor's office, the prosecutor will then decide whether the attorney general will be involved in the investigation to see what really happened.
Newschannel 3 has also learned that parents weren't officially notified at all about the shooting threat, or a 2006 bomb threat, in fact they were only notified after Newschannel 3 aired the report.
Many parents have said they are angry about that, and they think the superintendent is participating in a cover-up.
Again, Newschannel 3 will be sitting down with Superintendent Swan on Monday night and we'll bring you that story at 10:00 pm on the CW7 and on Newschannel 3 at 11:00 pm.
