Where's winter? - 02/28/13

At the beginning of February, many in West Michigan were asking, "Where's winter?"  After all, we had hardly any snow in November and December, and only in the last ten days of January did conditions turned whiter and colder.  Now we know: Old Man Winter was waiting for the last half of the season to show up!

February 2013 will go into the books as a colder, snowier than average month.  The average high for the month was 32.7, three degrees colder than the climatological (long term, 30 year) average; the average low was 18.8, about one degree colder than the long term average.  Snowfall was about twice what is average for February, coming in at about 30".  As you might expect in a cold, snowy month, there wasn't much sunshine.  In fact, we saw only about 25% of available sun.  That's less than average, even for the typically-gloomy month of February!
