A Rapid Tour Of Pennsylvania - 09/24/13
Good morning! My Dad and I have an opportunity, when schedules align, to take in Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers football games in the same weekend. As it turned out, we were grateful to do just that this past weekend. Plus, we played a little golf on a mountain course between Penn State and Pittsburgh. We'll have more on my average to lousy golf in a second.
It poured during Penn State vs. Kent State with temperatures in the lower 60s. We were soaked! It was the same system that brought thunderstorms to West Michigan last Thursday, and to a lesser degree, last Friday. Penn State won 34-0! A Sunday morning tee time at 11:00 AM had us teeing off at The Summit in Cresson, PA. Cresson sits at 2,000 feet, clearly in the mountains. Specks of fall foliage dotted the undulating course, not dissimilar to our fall foliage, with temperatures only in the middle 50s. The sun shone itself in a fleeting fashion; we dressed in layers and long pants. My Dad shot a 100 on the tough course, myself a 105 including a 9. Ouch! The slope, however is 133, which means it's a difficult trek in the Laurel Highlands of western PA.
We quickly drove into Pittsburgh to get ready for the Bears vs Steelers, a game the Steelers lost on 5 turnovers. At least, it was close in the beginning of the 4th quarter. My Dad grew up on a steady diet of the Steelers, living just southeast of Pittsburgh. I grew up watching and learning to love the same team. Despite the loss, we had a great time. It was cold with game-time temps in the 50s; in the end zone, way above the field the wind whirled making it feel colder. I'm always lucky to spend time with my family and this weekend was no different. Thanks for spending a little time at 'Your Port In The Storm'!
