Some food and drink may taste different aboard a plane

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) - If you ever thought your food or drink tastes different on board a plane, you may be right.

Previous studies have shown that loud engine noise may alter our ability to taste flavors.

However, what's often called the fifth taste--or umami--is not affected.

The four are salty, bitter, sweet, and sour, and umami is known to be a savory flavor.

Because tomatoes are rich in this savory flavor, drinks like tomato juice, or a bloody mary, may taste better than others while you're in the air.
