CSC charges against Kentwood Youth Counselor
KENTWOOD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A 24-year-old youth counselor has been arrested on 4 felony counts of CSC.
Wayland Police said Shawn Birman of Kentwood was arraigned in 57th District Court and it awaiting preliminary examination.
The investigation goes back to 2008 when Birman was a volunteer at band camp where several Wayland band students attended. Birman got to know the students at camp and attempted to stay in contact with them afterward through phone calls and social networking sites.
All three victims were students at the Wayland High School at the time of the sexual assaults.
Birman had access to a church office at Voice of Hope where he said he was a Director of Music Ministries. He was also a Youth Counselor for the Life Line Program at the Brightside Church.
The sexual assaults happened at both of the churches as well as a private residence and apartment.
Newschannel 3 attempted to contact Voice of Hope on Sunday but church representatives did not want to speak at this time.
