Gas Main ExplosionM-86 at Farrand Road, colon

Gas main fire sends smoke plume into sky

COLON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police have shut down M-86 between Fairfax Road and the Village Limits of Colon to repair a broken gas main.

Colon Police Department says they're not sure when the area will be back open. They're urging drivers to take an alternate route.

Police say a man had a seizure and hit an above ground gas main with his truck. Flames could be seen shooting 300 feet into the air after the gas ignited Friday. The driver of the truck was killed in the accident.

The BP Pipeline has been shutdown, the area is secure and the fire is out. There is no evidence of any significant spill. BP Pipelines has repair and clean-up crews on the scene.

You can see a short user submitted video of the fire here.
