Student heroin use meeting

PORTAGE, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A Kalamazoo County community will come together to fight a dangerous trend Monday.

They are concerned over teenagers abusing heroin and other drugs.

Recently the Mayor of Portage sent a letter to many in the city. Parents, teachers and other community members are very concerned about the well-being of these kids.

Just last month 18-year-old Amy Bousfield died after a heroin overdose. She was a Portage High School graduate.

Since then there has been a landslide of accusations, finger-pointing and angry parents who want to know what's going on inside the public school system. They wonder how teenagers are getting their hands on drugs.

Monday night is an effort to answer some of those questions.

The Substance Abuse Steering Committee will hold the meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 in the Portage City Council Chambers.

Experts will weigh in on alcohol and drug abuse, as well as identify what action steps to take next.

You're invited to attend, listen in and have your comments heard.

Marsha Wells, Superintendent of Portage Public Schools and Shirley Johnson, the School Board President, will also be there.
