LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Backers of a sweeping proposal to reshape Michigan government will get their day in the state Supreme Court.

The court on Thursday scheduled arguments for next Wednesday.

An appeal was filed last week after the Michigan Court of Appeals ordered election officials to keep the proposed constitutional amendment off the November ballot. The appeals court said a proposal of such magnitude must be considered at a constitutional convention before going to voters.

Justices could have decided not to hear an appeal from the group behind the measure to cut lawmakers and reduce pay for elected officials among many changes. Instead, the court will hear arguments on the application to appeal.

Two justices also declined to recuse themselves from the case.
