Detroit Police Monitor Linked to Kilpatrick Quits

DETROIT (AP) - The federal monitor of court-ordered reforms within the Detroit Police Department has resigned, with a judge saying she had inappropriate contact with disgraced ex-Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The Detroit Free Press says Sheryl Robinson Wood resigned Thursday and U.S. District Judge Julian Cook accepted her resignation Friday.

Cook says Wood had personal meetings with Kilpatrick, who resigned in September after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and assault. The judge says Wood also had improper discussions with Kilpatrick about the city's agreements with the U.S. Justice Department to correct police use of force and treatment of prisoners.

The Free Press says Wood did not respond to messages left at her office or her personal cell phone. The Associated Press left a message after hours Friday with the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.
